Anyone who has ever moved knows what a stressful experience it can be and moving is particularly challenging for seniors. Packing up a home of 30, 40 or 50 years to start over again, in what is usually a much smaller home can take an emotional toll on seniors. Moving from the family home to a retirement home, possibly in a new community, sorting through decades of family history and possessions is truly overwhelming. To save time, energy and sleepless nights, we have put together some tips to help you organize your move and help it progress as smoothly as possible.
Tips for Seniors Transitioning to a Retirement Home
Planning Ahead:
- If you have the time, begin to declutter months ahead of the planned move. Continue this decluttering process monthly until you start the major activities of sorting and packing for the move
- Throw away items such as outdated food or medications, clothes, or extra household items that just take up space. Make sure to shred old checks and documents that are no longer needed.
- Now is the time for grown children to come gather their old belongings they have kept at the house. They need to claim their keepsakes – old sports trophies, CDs, posters, school projects.

- Pack a box with items you will need for your first night in your new home. Include items such as fresh bedding, soap, toilet paper, toothpaste & toothbrush, comb, pajamas, towel, plate and utensils, one change of clothes, flashlight, tape, scissors.
Settling In:
- Prepare to spend a few days unpacking and organizing. Get someone to help if you can. Work as quickly as you can to make your new place feel like home.
- Remember that adjusting to your new surroundings may take days, weeks, or months. It is normal to grieve the loss of your old community and friends.
- If you have moved into a retirement community, get to know your neighbors and get involved in the activities that are offered. The sooner you get involved, the sooner you will feel like you belong.
